Male Sexual Health

Difficulties with sex are very common, much more so than most men would suspect. Common male sexual problems or issues are; erectile dysfunction or impotence, performance anxiety, delayed ejaculation, premature ejaculation, low sexual desire or low libido, and sexual aversion.

Healthy sexuality depends on good mental and physical functioning. There seem to be many challenges that can affect sexual functioning, which may include anxiety, depression, fertility issues, illness, disease, aging and disability. However, learning to adapt to these challenges is very important in maintaining a positive view of sexuality.

It can be quite daunting for men to talk about a sexual issue and to seek help, but remember that it is very common and that it is an identified health issue and not an embarrassment. It is important to recognize and get treatment for sexual problems for a number of reasons.

Male Sexual HealthFirstly, the sexual dysfunction can be an early marker of another disease. Therefore a medical check-up is often very important and should be the first point of call.

Additionally sex is such an integral part of life, and when there is an issue in that area, it has an immense impact on a man's emotional well-being. He may become worried, anxious, sad, angry and depressed. Some may even feel guilty about not being able to satisfy their sexual partner. This can in turn affect their overall happiness, well-being, confidence, self-esteem, and relationship satisfaction.  In short, sexual wellness can have an impact on all aspects of life.

When sex is going well it is often just a small part of what is perceived as a good relationship, but when sex becomes a problem this can really have a big influence on other areas of the relationship. It can also become very difficult to meet new sexual partners when dealing with a sexual issue, due to feelings such as shame, embarrassment and anxiety. It is important to remember that sexual problems can lead to relationship issues, and relationship issues can also lead to sexual problems.

The fact that these common sexual issues can lead to such negative effects upon the individual and the couple serves to illustrate the importance of detecting and treating sexual problems effectively.
