How does Relationship Counselling Work?

Relationship Counselling, Relationship CounsellorAt Sexual Health Australia relationship or marriage counsellors take an Integrative Couples Approach in that we would draw from multiple theories and treatment strategies depending on your needs. In relationship counselling, the counsellor predominantly tends to take a Solution-Focused Approach, which means we are most concerned with finding a solution to your problem and work through it together. The relationship/marriage counsellor will be active, directive and goal oriented.

Additionally, the relationship counsellor will selectively borrow techniques or strategies from other approaches or theories depending on your needs, which may involve Behavioural and Cognitive-Behavioural (CBT), Intergenerational, Problem-Focused, Narrative and Psychodynamic approaches.

Most relationship issues do not get better on their own. It requires some commitment from you and at Sexual Health Australia, our relationship/marriage counsellors will guide you through the process, will motivate you and most importantly we are there for support every step of the way. It is also important to us to provide you with useful skills that you can implement in the absence of the counsellor and throughout your life.

In the counselling sessions we may work on the following:

  • Establishing common goals
  • Reconstructing and reinventing the relationship
  • Building trust
  • Making sense of each other’s feelings
  • Handling conflict/anger
