    How does Sex Therapy Work?

A sex therapy consultation is similar to any other counselling session in that the sex therapist will discuss, talk and listen to you (and/or your partner). The main difference is that the sex therapist is also specifically qualified to treat/manage sexual concerns. The sex therapist will provide you with education material, information, tips, suggestions and some home work tasks. It is important to state that in a sex therapy session there is no touching or there are no sexual acts performed.

Sex Therapy, Sex TherapistAt Sexual Health Australia, the sex therapist takes an Integrated Approach in that we would draw from multiple theories and treatment strategies depending on your needs.

When providing sex therapy, the sex therapist tends to take a Solution-Focused Approach, which means we are most concerned with finding a solution to your problem and work through it together. The sex therapist or counsellor will be active, directive and goal oriented.

Additionally, the sex therapist or counsellor will selectively borrow techniques or strategies from other approaches or theories depending on your needs, which may involve Behavioural and Cognitive-Behavioural (CBT), Intergenerational, Problem-Focused, Narrative and Psychodynamic approaches.

Most sexual health concerns or relationship issues do not get better on their own. It requires some commitment from you and the sex therapist or counsellors will guide you through the process, will motivate you and most importantly the sex therapist is there for support. The sex therapist will also provide you with useful skills that you can implement and use in the absence of the sex therapist or counsellor and throughout your life.

In order for the sex therapy sessions to be most effective the sex therapist or counsellor will give you some behavioural tasks or home work exercises, which will be conducted in the privacy of your own home.

    These tasks may consist of:

    • Specific behavioural tasks to work on your intimacy
    • Specific techniques to work on your sexuality concerns
    • Biofeedback
    • Anxiety reduction/relaxation techniques
    • Relationship specific tasks
    • Communication exercises
