What is a genital wart or the Human Papilloma Virus?

Genital or anal warts are small lumps that may grow on the genital or anal areas of men and women. They are caused by several types of Human Papilloma Viruses (HPV). There are more than 100 different types of Human Papilloma Viruses affecting various parts of the body and about 40 affect the genitals.

The Human Papilloma Virus may present in the following ways:

  • Visible warts - which can found around the genital or anal area
  • Sub-clinical infection - where there are no visible warts, but the virus is detected via a pap smear or biobsy

Prevalence?

Genital Warts or Human Papilloma VirusThe Human Papilloma Virus is very common. It is estimated that most sexually active people will have been exposed to the virus. However, only a small number of people with the virus will develop genital warts and many will never know they have the virus.

How is it transmitted?

Genital warts are very contagious. HPV is usually transmitted through genital skin contact during sexual activity.
