Testing of Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis in women can be diagnosed by taking a sample of vaginal discharge with a swab ( a special cotton bud) collected from the vagina.

In men, most doctors will take a swab from the tip of the penis.

These tests can be conducted by your local doctor or sexual health clinic.

Treatment or Management of Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is treated with a single dose of antibiotics.  Sexual partners need to be treated at the same time otherwise re-infection can occur.

Important facts to note, when being treated for trichomoniasis:

  • Do not have unprotected sex until all sexual partners have been treated
  • Avoid alcohol until 24 hours after treatment
  • Pregnant women should advise the doctor as this could alter their management

Prevention of Trichomoniasis

Treatment for TrichomoniasisUsing condoms when having sex is the best way of protecting yourself and your sexual partner. Additionally having fewer sexual partners means you would lower the risk of having sex with someone who has an infection.
