Female Sexual Health
Women's sexuality has been considered a taboo subject for a long time, but with the arrival of Viagra for men, women's sexuality has also become a more acceptable and common topic of discussion, especially in the media. Most importantly though, women themselves acknowledge the importance of their own sexuality and women of all ages are willing to learn more about their sexual health.
Sexuality is NOT just about Sex
For a woman, as for a man, sexuality encompasses a very broad range of activities and feelings, and besides sex it includes gender identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction. A women's sexuality is experienced and expressed in thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviors, practices, roles and relationships. It is an integral part of a woman's life and it fulfills an important physical and emotional need for closeness, intimacy and overall well-being.
It is important to realize that there is no ‘normal' sexuality and that women's interest in sex and responses to sexual stimulation can vary widely. The quality of a woman's sexual experience is affected by individual differences, by life situations, by age and hormonal levels, and by overall health and well-being.
A sexual problem, often referred to as sexual dysfunction, is anything that interferes with a woman's sexual satisfaction. There can be many challenges that affect a woman's sexual functioning, such as depression, fertility issues, illness, disease, aging and disability. However, learning to adapt to these challenges is very important in maintaining a positive view of sexuality.
