What can be done to improve sexual functioning?

Conduct your own research/Educate yourself

It is important to realize that we are all different and sexuality or intimacy works different for everyone. Therefore conducting your own research or educating yourself in order to find out what might work for you as a sexual being is important.

So include things like:

  • Improve Sexual Functioning after Cancer TreatmentRead about your treatment and sexual problems
  • Visit different workshops or education sessions around the topic
  • Discuss your sexuality issues with your doctor
  • Speak to other patients about their experiences

Involve your partner

Good communication is really important!

Talk about your fears with your partner and let them know when you feel ready, if you would like them to do things differently, and how they can help you to become aroused. But also ask your partner how they feel about being sexual and intimate with you, what are their worries or concerns and try to take these into account.

Receive Medical Care

Talk or consult your doctor about the medical treatments available for you in order to assist with your sexual functioning.

Your doctor might suggest:

  • Hormonal Therapy (i.e. Estrogen or Testosterone)
  • Local Estrogen creams
  • Antidepressants
  • Vaginal lubricants
  • Products that facilitate erectile dysfunction
